What I Put On My face
All skin is good skin, which is why good skincare is more of a journey than a destination. We all love a one-off tip—but, at Byrdie, we’re more interested in how our skin evolves over time. The product we've used for a decade, the ingredient cocktail that made us glow, the step we never skip, and all the advice in between. This is the stuff that makes a real difference. With What I Put on My Face, we’re bringing you the rituals, recommendations, and failed experiments (we’ve all had them) straight from celebrities, founders, and influencers who’ve gone through it themselves.
If anyone knows what makes a great sunscreen, it’s professional golfer Lily Muni He, who spends a lot of time in the sun while playing on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour.
He has been playing golf since she can remember. Her father was a “huge golfer” when she was a child, so she “kind of grew up on the golf course.” She began taking lessons at age five and started playing competitively at six. “At the beginning, it was just something that I enjoyed, but as I started competing and getting better, I really fell in love with the game … it’s so nice to be able to go out on the golf course, be surrounded by nature, and then play your own game.”
When she's not on the course, He doubles as a fashion and beauty influencer, showing off her feminine style to over a million combined followers on Instagram and TikTok. She loves flirty dresses, cute kitten heels, fun manicures, and of course, a solid skincare routine—which is why she recently partnered with Shiseido for its suncare initiative.
Ahead, He shares all her skincare essentials, including the cleanser she's used for over a decade and the SPF that keeps her protected on the course.
About Her Skin
"I started golfing when I was five years old, so very, very young. I've been out in the sun all day, every day, and oftentimes a really strong sun all year round—you need good weather to golf.
"I've been really lucky to have very good skin… I have the occasional pimple and acne here and there, but not too bad. I would say I have very sensitive and dry skin, like combination skin; I have to use very gentle products the majority of the time just because my skin can become allergic or I can develop eczema in spots."
How She Got Into Skincare
"My mom always told me to protect my skin not only with sunscreen, but with face wash and moisturizer; I think I started using a moisturizer when I was in elementary school. She made it a very big deal to put on sunscreen every day.
"When I was younger, I was in the sun so much and although my mom tried to make me put on sunscreen, I wasn't always reapplying as often as I should have. I remember developing hyperpigmentation on my face, light spots just from being in the sun too much. I realized how important it is to apply sunscreen daily."
Her Morning and Evening Skincare Routines
"I travel a lot for competitions and just life in general, so I already travel with too many clothes and too many skincare products. I really have to narrow it down; I can't have a skincare routine with 20 different steps, and I’ve realized that doesn't quite sit well with my skin.
"I always do a cleanser in the morning and then a gentle toner, then a good moisturizer. In the daytime I never, ever, ever forget my sunscreen.
"At night, I double cleanse with oil cleanser and then a foam cleanser, then toner and the same moisturizer morning and night. It's very simple but it works well for me."
The Skincare Step She Never Skips
"Adding in that step at night of oil cleansing really helps, especially when I am putting on so much sunscreen, and especially if the sunscreen is sweat-resistant. It feels like it really dissolves all the sunscreen and makeup."
The Product That's Been In Her Routine the Longest
"Growing up in China, the one skincare product that I’d always see not only my mom using, but my grandma using was the Shiseido Cleansing Foam. I remember that used to be the one product sitting in my grandma's shower. On the weekends, my parents would drop me off at my grandma's and I would pretend to be an adult and do skincare and just end up using her facial cleanser.
"It wasn't until recent years that I realized just how good the cleanser really is. I think I've just gone through so many different types and I came back to it."
Her Most-Used Product
"Sunscreen is the product that I've gone through a million different brands. I've tried all of them because I feel like I'm quite particular [since] I'm out in the sun a lot. I really need a sunscreen that works well not just for everyday use but also for sports and competition.
"Recently I just started using Shiseido's Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion, and it actually is just the perfect sunscreen for days where I'm playing and days where I'm not, it fits into my simple routine and does it all."
What She Looks for in a Sunscreen
"I like very lightweight sunscreen. It’s actually very easy to feel whether or not the sun is penetrating through your sunscreen, like you feel this light burn on your skin, so I need a sunscreen that actually can stay with me throughout the day.
"I need a good strong sunscreen that's not too heavy and doesn't leave a white cast. That's also super important for me because of how often I reapply. I hate it when I end up looking like a ghost at the end of the day."
The Best Skincare Advice She's Ever Gotten
"Stay hydrated, drink lots of water, apply sunscreen, and keep it simple. My mom, she's... I'm not going to say how old she is, but I'm 24, and she had me a bit later on in life. Her skin now looks incredible, and everyone has always praised her for having such good skin, and as long as I can remember, my mom has always had a very simple routine, so I think it's just about using things that work for you, a simple routine but good quality [products]. If it's not broke, don't fix it."
Her Skincare Pet Peeve
"I can't go to sleep without washing my face."
The Newest Addition to Her Routine
"I actually tried an essence recently. Shiseido was kind enough to send me a few different products to try and usually I'm very sensitive so when I see things like active ingredients or whatnot or [the phrase] “renewing,” I get a bit timid. But I think I really loved it!
"I can see myself adding it into my skincare routine probably once or twice a week. I think that's probably a good balance and a good something new as I'm getting older."
