Byrdie's Editorial Guidelines

Principles

Every piece of content on Byrdie is conceived and created with these core principles in mind:

  • Curation over clickbait: There’s a lot of beauty chatter out there. We could try and cover it all, but we’d rather just give you the good stuff. We believe an intriguing headline only works if the article it leads to leaves you feeling satisfied. We don’t claim to cover every single thing happening in the world of beauty, or try to lure you in with titles that underdeliver—we think it’d make only the information actually useful to your beauty journey that much harder to find. Trust that we’re here to only share stories that inspire you, make you feel seen, and help you level up in your beauty routine—whatever that may be.
  • Reliable information is power: We always interview the industry’s leading dermatologists, physicians, personal trainers, makeup artists, dietitians, and stylists as part of our reporting, so you can rest assured that the acne advice or hair health hack we recommend is expert-approved. When it comes to our health coverage, we’ll never publish a story without quotes from the highest authority on the subject—that means board-certified medical doctors, registered dietitians, and NASM- or ACE-certified personal trainers. Our content also gets fact-checked for accuracy and receives a thorough read from a relevant member of our Beauty & Wellness Review Board, ensuring each article goes through multiple layers of review. We also acknowledge that there are global wellness trends that might not have scientific backing just yet, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not worth covering. We promise to de-bunk the garbage and be upfront about what's clinically proven and what isn't so that you have all of the information before you choose to try a treatment or spend your money.
  • Our readers come first: Every article is published with the intention of helping you feel more confident in your own beauty journey. Our stories are inspired by your feedback (drop us a note at contact@byrdie.com or follow us on Instagram), as well as the latest beauty breakthroughs, product trends, ingredient discoveries, and more.

Fact-Checking

Our stories are vibrant and relatable, but they’re also held to the highest standards of journalistic integrity. Our content is thoroughly reviewed by professional fact-checkers who comb through every sentence, statistic, and statement of fact with a critical eye, cross-checking our articles with peer-reviewed studies and the most up-to-date clinical research. Anytime we share information that didn't come from a direct quote from a qualified expert, we'll fact-check against medical journals and cite a trusted, peer-reviewed study right there in the story to let you know we've done the research.

The Beauty & Wellness Review Board

We’re proud to say that the Byrdie team includes an in-house Beauty & Wellness Review Board: nearly 50 renowned dermatologists, dietitians, general practitioners, gynecologists, personal trainers, and psychologists, who ensure our content is accurate, comprehensive, true, and reflective of the latest industry research. We strive to be the most trusted source in your beauty and wellness journey and our Board serves an important purpose along the way.

Writers & Sources

Our writers don’t just synthesize and regurgitate information; they’re authorities in their respective fields. They are critical, ask the hard questions, and aren’t fooled by the latest and greatest beauty and wellness gimmicks. Byrdie writers are thoroughly vetted for potential biases, conflicts of interest, and experience before they’re hired. Each of our contributors has multiple years of experience conducting interviews with industry authorities in order to write thorough, evidence-based articles that answer the questions you actually want to know—and to answer them correctly. If you read something in a Byrdie article, know that the information came straight from a qualified source (like a board-certified dermatologist) or a medically-backed, peer-reviewed journal.

At Byrdie, we work to consistently provide thoughtful, well-researched, high quality content. It is against our guidelines to publish automatically generated content using AI (artificial intelligence) writing tools such as ChatGPT.

Corrections & Content Quality Updates

Accuracy is at the core of every story we write at Byrdie—but information can change. We regularly re-review and update our content to ensure that it’s reflective of the most up-to-date industry research, but if you beat us to an update, please send corrections to our senior editor Holly Rhue (hrhue@dotdash.com).

Diversity & Inclusion

Diversity and inclusivity are at the heart of everything we do. We work to ensure that when you come to Byrdie, you feel seen and represented—regardless of your age, race, gender identity, or sexual orientation. We’re constantly aiming to lift up underrepresented voices to share their perspectives and join the beauty dialogue. Beauty comes in all different shapes, colors and sizes, and we believe no one should be left out of the conversation.

We promise to be upfront and transparent with the actionable steps we’re taking to make diversity, inclusivity, and representation our number-one priority. One such step is our Diversity Pledge, our promise to hold ourselves accountable and put forward the most beautiful, representative Byrdie. Our pledge is quantifiable, and we share an update on our progress at the end of each quarter to give our readers visibility into our results. Read our Diversity Pledge in its entirety here.

Byrdie has also implemented an in-house Anti-Bias Review Board lead by Dr. Mackenzie Price. Dr. Price's team advises on Byrdie's content to ensure that it's free of bias and the most inclusive it can be, whether that means adjusting the story to be more visually representative of the full range of Byrdie readers or changing our product selections to give sound recommendations at a multitude of price ranges.

Editorial Ethics

Like many other beauty publications, Byrdie editors and select contributors often work with beauty PR companies, beauty brands, spas, and salons to support our coverage. These experiences enable us to stay on top of the latest industry breakthroughs, whether it’s a groundbreaking new skincare ingredient or an in-office laser that’s going to be the next big thing.

With that, we do not cover any treatments, products, or experiences that we wouldn’t personally recommend. Furthermore, we do not accept monetary compensation in exchange for coverage. Our experts and contributors are required to abide by the FTC disclosure guidelines.

Product Reviews

Part of our mission at Byrdie is to provide you with thorough and unbiased information on beauty and wellness products that make you feel your best. We do the heavy lifting by tapping into our wide network of experts to help recommend the best products on the market—and, in many cases, we test and review these products ourselves, too (or have our trusted contributors do so). The goal? To provide you with as much information as possible about each product so you can decide if it might work for your needs and budget. If you visit links within our content, we may receive commissions from your purchases, but we never receive any compensation or consideration for the content of our recommendations. Our product recommendations are purely editorial. Occasionally, beauty brands and PR agencies will send us products for editorial consideration, but our thoughts and opinions are our own.
