What to Look for in Pajamas
- Material: “Material is a key element that defines the comfort and suitability of pajamas for different conditions and preferences,” says fashion stylist and owner of women’s brand HEYMIMISISTERS Stefaniya Veresovaya, who has been creating and designing her own brand of PJs for almost a decade. Veresovaya recommends silk, fleece and flannel, and cotton. "Silk's natural protein fibers provide an exceptionally smooth and soft texture, making it a luxurious choice for sleepwear,” says the designer. While fleece and flannel provide excellent warmth in pajamas, they can sometimes cause overheating due to their synthetic makeup. As for cotton, Veresovaya says these stand out as the comfiest option, mostly because they’re breathable, lightweight, and enhance air circulation. “This material helps to wick away moisture, keeping the wearer cool and comfortable in warmer weather,” she adds.
- Fit: Much like the style of your PJ, the fit is a personal preference, too. Your nighttime getup (to lay down in) should fit comfortably, with enough room to move freely without feeling restricted. This can mean different things to different people. Still, the general rule of thumb is a waistband that doesn’t dig into the skin and a secure yet relaxed silhouette, ensuring optimal coziness for a good night’s rest. While some may find an oversized set comfortable enough, others may feel better in a loose sleep shirt.
- Length: The ideal length for your jammies can vary based on personal preference, the season, and comfort. People typically go for longer pants in the winter and shorts in the summer, but it also depends on if you run hot or cold. If you’re shopping for PJ pants, be sure to check the inseam length and consider selecting a style with different inseams if you are tall or petite. If the brand does not have one, typically, the smaller the size (XXS, XS, etc.), the shorter the inseam length.
