Blazers are an amazing workwear staple, and can serve you well as going-out attire or a light jacket between seasons. But when you have a petite frame, typically under 5'4", shopping for the perfect tailored jacket is sadly not quite so simple. “Many blazers may be too long, and petite individuals also often struggle with sleeve lengths being too long, so when shopping for a petite person, please be prepared to have some alterations done for a proper fit,” says style influencer and fashion expert Karine Laudort.

While there are definitely non-petite sizing blazers that can still complement a shorter frame—and you can always get yours tailored if not—it’s often safer when shopping online to opt for a piece specifically proportioned with petite body shapes in mind. Luckily, there are so many clothing stores offering petite sizing these days. After consulting fashion experts, we conducted hours of research on the best petite blazers, evaluating them on style, design features, comfort, and size range.

Size Range: 0-16 | Materials: Polyester, rayon, spandex | Colors: 1

Available in regular and petite lengths, the Avenue features just one contrasting button at the waistline, plus two wide pockets for carrying your employee ID, credit cards, and notepad. And by the way, we’re obsessed with the fact that Nic+Zoe is led by a mother-daughter duo.

If you’re looking for a statement jacket that totally makes any outfit (and you’re willing to invest a little more), this Polo Ralph Lauren number is it. Not only is it really striking with its navy blue color and golden buttons, but it also features a cropped silhouette and cinching around waist height that will ensure it complements petite frames beautifully. Pair it with a simple T-shirt and slacks or dress it down with a pair of jeans. We also love the idea of this jacket over a white sundress for a cool and feminine look.

Blazers are an instant way to elevate an outfit, and when you need one instantly, this Calvin Klein pick from Amazon won’t let you down. Two buttons cinch the waist for a professional fit, but you can consider leaving the blazer open when the occasion calls for something more casual. Attention to detail, such as the back hem’s vented folds and subtle slit pockets at the chest and waist, set it apart from your standard blazer.

Size Range: 4-12 | Materials: Polyester | Colors: 1

We’re high-key obsessed with this deep brown blazer that’s a touch unexpected and a whole lot stylish. It pairs great with neutrals such as white, black or tan, but would also look amazing over your favorite blue jeans. We also love that it’s made from vegan leather, which boasts the double advantage of saving you a lot of money compared to the real thing and of being a great choice for anyone who has ethical issues with leather.

Finally, an oversized blazer for petites that won’t swallow you in fabric. It might seem counterintuitive for petite-framed people to opt for a slightly boxy fit, but Petite Studio gives customers the boyfriend look while keeping the proportions of those who are shorter in mind. You can trust this classic plaid blazer will last far beyond a single season because the slow-fashion brand takes time to construct its garments using ethical practices and durable fabrics.

Sandy Poole, a fashion designer and stylist who is petite herself, loves this oversized blazer for those with shorter torsos—pair it with equally relaxed pants for achieving that much coveted effortless cool-girl look. We’re big fans of the dark khaki green hue here, which is a bit more interesting than a black or navy while still being discreet enough for work. Also, the tailored shoulders and wide lapels are reminiscent of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 era, and we’re always here for that.

Size Range: 0-24 | Materials: Polyester, spandex | Colors: 1

Have we mentioned how great Talbots is when shopping for petite clothing? Well, it really is—here’s another winning design from the inclusive brand that’s a stunning choice for those professional women who still want to infuse a little prettiness into their workwear. This ivory number has the makings of a classic blazer, but softens the look with a ribbon wrap tie that adds a little je ne sais quoi to an otherwise traditional suiting jacket. We love how it’s available in petite and plus petite sizes.

A corduroy blazer is such a versatile piece to have on hand. It’s perfect for work, but also comes in clutch as a mid-season jacket for all your weekend wanderings. This one from Lands’ End comes in a lovely dark blue color, and the cotton corduroy is complemented with a touch of spandex for extra stretch and comfort.

Size Range: 2-12 | Materials: Polyester, spandex | Colors: 1

Though blazers are often associated with workwear, they can actually stand in as a fancy going-out top if you play your cards right. This bright number from Extro & Vert looks amazing worn by itself, with its deep V, one-button closure, and fun pocket details, or over a simple black or white tank top if you’re looking for a little more modesty. Invest in the matching orange kick-flare pants, or wear it with lightwash blue jeans.

Size Range: 2-12 | Materials: Cotton, elastane, polyester | Colors: 2

Figuring out what to wear to the office can be a headache after a long day or on a groggy morning, so investing in a basic blazer that pretty much goes with everything can save you a lot of brain space. The Boden Marylebone is it for us: It has a tailored, semi-fitted silhouette that instantly infuses your outfit with elegance, and if you opt for the black version, it will literally work with every item in your closet. If you go for the fiery red color, it will be a teeny bit harder to style but packs a punch. Basically, there are no bad decisions to be made here.

Size Range: 00-22 | Materials: Cotton, polyester | Colors: 2

For a workplace-friendly take on the humble denim jacket, may we suggest a denim-effect blazer? Available in medium-wash blue or off-white, this offering from Loft features two rows of three buttons, notched lapels and back venting. The silhouette is semi-fitted and can be worn over jeans, slacks, and dresses alike.

What to Look for in Petite Blazers

  • Fit: The length of the jacket is the first thing to consider—ideally, you’ll want to opt for something under 27 inches, depending on your exact measurements and the look you’re going for. Many petite jackets come in at around a 24-inch length. Secondly, the shoulder and sleeve proportions are crucial in blazers for petites. “Ensure the shoulder seams sit at the edge of your shoulders, as a proper fit in this area is crucial for overall appearance,” says Laudort. “Opt for blazers with shorter sleeve lengths or be prepared to get them tailored to avoid them looking overly long on your arms.”
  • Cut: Petite blazers are specifically designed to complement shorter torsos and arms, and they come in all sorts of styles, from fitted work blazers to cool, relaxed-fit options, with cinched waists or straight lines, full-length or cropped sleeves, etc. "If you want an oversized look, get a regular, non-petite size or style,” suggests Poole. “If you wear an oversized look, pair it with something tight or short underneath to juxtapose the shapes. This will help break up the oversized look, so you’re not swimming in the fabric.”
  • Fabric: “Personally I like natural fibers—linen, cotton, wool—as much as possible because they prevent sweating and are more breathable,” says Poole. “Wool crepe is a nice classic fabric that can be worn anywhere—for work or paired with jeans.” With that in mind, synthetic fabrics such as polyester or acrylic also have their place: They often help keep the cost down, and work well when it’s not too hot out. Additionally, you may want to “consider blazers with a slight stretch for added comfort and a better fit,” notes Laudort. Look for spandex or elastane in the fabric composition.
FAQ
  • What are the different ways to style a blazer?

One of our favorite aspects of blazers is their versatility in styling because they aren’t normally limited to a single reason or season. “Pairing a blazer with relaxed jeans and tennis sneakers automatically makes it look more casual than wearing it with a pair of pumps,” says fashion stylist Beverly Osemwenkhae. “I love styling a blazer with a slip dress that can take you from work to dinner—it's all about pairing it with the right accessories.” Or style a leather blazer with dark jeans and heels for a night out.
