Makeup By Mario's New Lipstick Is Inspired by Y2K New York

We put it to the test.

Mario Dedivanovic's story started with a lipstick... as good stories often do. It was the first beauty product Dedivanovic sold when he worked at Sephora in '00s New York, a gig that eventually landed him work as a makeup artist. And we all know how that (a wildly successful makeup line, Kim Kardashian's go-to glam guy, the era of contouring) turned out.

Now, Makeup by Mario is adding a new collection to its beloved repertoire that was inspired by the very place it all started. Launching December 23, the SuperSatin Lipsticks feature 18 shades that both grip and glide on your lips. According to the brand, the ultra-creamy, satin-y finish is "Mario's perfect take on a classic everyday lipstick." And if it's Mario's perfect take? It just might be the best ever.

Ahead, everything you need to know about the new launch, as well as team Byrdie's honest reviews.

The Inspiration

The SuperSatin line is a love letter to New York from one of its very own longtime residents: Dedivanovic himself.

Each of the 18 curated shades (this is the makeup artist's biggest collection of reds and signature nudes thus far) is named after a NYC neighborhood or area code, in the case of shade 917, that he holds dear. The pinky-brown nude Bronx Baby, for example, was named for the neighborhood Dedivanovic grew up in. It's no coincidence that the color is his admitted favorite in the collection.

The Formula

The SuperSatin lipsticks were created to be creamy and comfortable, leaving your lips with iconic color and a soft sheen. Extremely lightweight, Dedivanovic wants this to be your everyday, go-to lipstick. The colors are wearable, the texture is silky, and application is a one-swipe affair.

"I absolutely love the texture of these lipsticks, they are so creamy and comfortable, but aren't overly shiny or glossy. It's a really classic formula with the nostalgic vanilla scent to match. If you're on the fairer end of the spectrum you may have a little trouble with the shade range—most of the nudes are what I would call 'statement nudes' and look like you're wearing a nude lipstick rather than a shade that could actually be your skin tone. That being said, I love the cooler tones in Bronx Baby for a bit of an edgier take on nude, and the reds are especially pretty, too."

"As someone who was not impressed by the MoistureGlow Plumping Lip Color, I’m thrilled to report that the SuperSatin lipsticks are, much like the Ultra Suede Sculpting Lip Pencils, absolute bangers in my book. They’re everything a satin lipstick should be: Comfortable and pigmented, leaving a nice, subtle stain as they fade away. I’ve been getting a lot of wear out of the shade Tribeca (I like to pair it with the Sculpting Lip Pencil in Kelley), and I get at least one compliment every time I put it on."

"If anyone can convince me to go outside my beauty comfort zone, it’s Makeup by Mario. The shade Nolita is a little deeper and cooler than my usual go-to soft mauves and pinky nudes, but I was immediately drawn to it. Thanks in part to the formula’s buttery texture, this lipstick feels easy to wear and versatile despite the rich color."

"I usually shy away from lipstick—I'm a gloss girl—but this new lipstick from Makeup by Mario made me a believer. It's a super creamy formula so it glides on my lips with ease. I'm wearing Downtown Girl which is a pretty brown, complements my skin tone, and is a perfect addition to my winter lip stash."

"Makeup by Mario’s SuperSatin lipsticks glide on so smoothly and are ultra-pigmented, making them a standout for bold lip looks. The finish is more intense than I normally do for everyday, but the shade I tried—West Village—is a stunning berry that I can’t wait to play with for evening events throughout the holiday season and the rest of winter. I layered it together with Saltair’s Lip Oil Balm in Acai for a glossy lip combo moment, but the product looks equally stunning on its own."

You can shop the Makeup by Mario SuperSatin lipsticks at makeupbymario.com for $28 each starting December 23.
